Ernest gaines the sky is gray was impressed and interested throughout the whole. I admire the bold move of focusing on such a sad world--the world of the poor. And, as a writer, I am of course fond of the author for being able to keep full attention all throughout, never allowing a moment of dullness to interrupt.
The reader is made aware that the act of having the tooth pulled is a large ordeal to the family. With James and his mother departing for the day, the rest of the family is left alone without enough firewood, the breadwinners are not able to work, and money has to be used that could have been put towards food for the house.
With all of these facets, why would Gaines end the story with this quest unfinished? My thought to answer this question is perhaps the quest turned into one for perspective and knowledge and veered away from the original purpose.
While the problems the family faces each day are still active and important, the reader sees the mind of James changing.
James wants to be like the young scholar, perhaps to have the opportunity to voice his opinions and emotions without reprimand but also to have the luxury of not needing to work all day to support himself and his family. Ernest gaines the sky is gray does care for his family and wants to be there for them, but I think there is a part of him that wants his independence and chance to stand tall for himself.
The title has multiple purposes that may explain the cut off ending.
People who favor gray can be the lone wolf type or narrow-minded. But this much is clear.

Gaines ernest gaines the sky is gray about Louisiana have been understood and responded to largely as writings about race. Less clear, because less attention has been paid to this question, is how much is left when race is left out or made irrelevant to the readers.
This is neither a subjective nor an unimportant question. But instead, Gaines allows James to tell his story in his own words. What might be complex, three-dimensional people with equally complex motivations threaten to become two-dimensional caricatures with obscure, even uninteresting motivations when seen through the eyes of a child.
Moreover, while an adult may be judged on the basis of his or her thoughts and actions, a child is still too completely a product of his or her parents to evaluate as an independent being.
The Sky is Gray
Though still a child, James is on the verge of youth. One might therefore argue that the real story is yet to be told, that it cannot be told until we see the boy as a man.
The distinction his mother makes between men and bums is both subtle and significant: For example, in Ernest Gaines Valerie Babb ernest gaines the sky is gray While they wait for the dentist to reopen his office, Octavia must devise ways in which she can keep James from the cold and at the same time carefully adhere to strict rules of racial separation.
